Parducci Winemaking Team Grows with Addition of Greg Winter, Director of Winemaking

Parducci Wine Cellars, Mendocino's longest running winery, has announced hiring Greg Winter to join the winemaking team as Director of Winemaking.

Greg Winter will join Head Winemaker Bob Swain in crafting the award-winning Parducci & True Grit wines.

Greg earned his bachelor's degree with highest honors in Viticulture and Enology at University of California, Davis. Greg will join Parducci with nearly 20 years experience, having worked as a winemaker at R.H. Phillips, Valley of the Moon and most recently as the Director of Winemaking at Hogue Cellars.

Bob Swain, who has been at the helm of Parducci Wine Cellars for the last 20 years, will retire at the end of 2018. Bob assumed the role of Head Winemaker in 1997 and has spent the last 20 years improving the quality of the venerable Parducci brand. From improved winemaking practices, to returning Parducci to an all Mendocino County appellation, Bob Swain has given new life to this now 85 year old brand. Multiple 90+ point scores on recent vintages are only the latest markers of his positive impact.

"We're excited to have Greg join us at Parducci Wine Cellars", states Bob Swain. "Greg's experience and skills are a perfect match for our winery today and for where we want to take this operation in the future. I look forward to spending the next year with Greg while he gets familiar with our unique winery, cellar crew and community as I prepare to formally hand off all winemaking operations and retire at the end of 2018."

"I am thrilled to work with Bob over the next year", says Greg Winter, "I'm eager to absorb as much wisdom and local knowledge as I can from Bob, as I prepare to take on winemaking for these great brands."

4th Annual Parducci Crush Rush 5K Benefit Raised Over $6,500

119 runners, joggers, and walkers participated in the 4th annual Crush Rush 5K Benefit Run hosted by Parducci Wine Cellars. The event raised over $6,500 for Ukiah Unified School Gardens and Nutrition Programs.

"Many runners commented that it was one of the most beautiful courses they had run because they were running through the vineyards, around the water reclamation pond and among trees as opposed to running on concrete," said D'Selkie Ukiah Unified School Garden Program Coordinator.

The run took place midway through the harvest of Parducci Wine Cellars' estate vines. Jess Arnsteen, Parducci Farm and Garden Director, said, "We're very thankful for the generous contributions from our sponsors; without them this event wouldn't be possible. It's terrific to see how supportive our local businesses are of our children and community." The sponsors of this year's Crush Rush were Acme Rigging, Friedman's Home Improvement, Realty World - Selzer Realty, The Golden Pig, Savings Bank of Mendocino, Ukiah Natural Foods Co-Op, Schat's Bakery, and Thanksgiving Coffee.

The School Garden Program serves 8 schools from preschool to 8th grade in Ukiah, reaching 4,200 students. Rochelle Enzler, Director of Events, said, "We are so happy to support the Ukiah Unified School Garden Program and their mission to educate our youth on healthy diet, nutrition, and gardening."

"Parducci Wine Cellars is a wonderful community partner involved in our school garden program," said D'Selkie. "We are so fortunate to live in a place where people care enough to support children, school gardens, and local food."

True Grit Wines Win GOLD Medals at 2017 SF International Wine Competition

Parducci True Grit Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah were both awarded GOLD medals at "the largest and most influential international wine competition in America, the San Francisco International Wine Competition (SFIWC)."

"Now in its 37th year, the SFIWC maintains the highest level of integrity with a blind-tasting system performed by a highly experienced panel of internationally acclaimed wine experts."

"A SFIWC medal has been established as a reliable indication of wine excellence, and wines recognized as medal-worthy by our judges are universally understood to be among the very best."

Library True Grit Petite Sirah Receives Raving Review from Steve Heimoff, Former Wine Enthusiast Editor

Esteemed wine critic, Steve Heimoff, recently tasted True Grit Petite Sirah library wines that he first reviewed back in 2009... How have they been holding up? "I’m happy to say the wines continue to offer plenty of interest", said Steve.

"It’s almost a given that wine critics call Petite Sirah ageable. I nearly always did in my career, for a couple reasons. First, it’s really tannic in youth, but balanced, and secondly, I’ve been lucky enough to taste many old Petite Sirahs, so I have first-hand experience. A good one, from a good vintage, will last for decades, in the right cellar. And Parducci’s Petite Sirah is always good; at Wine Enthusiast, when these three wines were released, I gave the 2004 93 points, the 2005 89 points, and the 2006 I scored at 90 points. I’m happy to say the wines continue to offer plenty of interest."

"2006: The wine was $30 on release, a lot for a Peite Sirah, but it was quite good. I called it “consistently one of the best in California” and gave it 90 points. It was tasty when I reviewed it in 2009, and now, eight years later, it still is, although it’s showing its age. The fresh fruits—blackberries, currants—are drying out and turning savory and leathery, and there’s a soft, dark chocolate unctuousness, but the spices are still there, and so are the tannins. It’s a very nice wine to drink now, elegant and complex. I would keep the score at 90 points."

"2005: When the wine was first released, I called it “young, dry, jammy, acidic and tannicly immature,” a rather “aloof” wine. Now, at the age of 12 years, it’s really blossomed. The tannins are resolved, although still firm, and the primary blackberry-cherry and cocoa nib flavors are evolving into secondary status: dried fruits and currants, with those mushroom, leather and bacon notes that mark more mature bottles of the variety. The wine now has a softness that makes it round and supple. Lovely to drink now, and will last for another ten years, at least. Score: 91 points."

Parducci Small Lot Pinot Noir Named One of "5 Wines You Should Be Buying on Amazon This Summer", by

Raving Review of Parducci Small Lot Pinot Noir From, Named One of The "5 Wines You Should Be Buying on Amazon This Summer"

"Summer is as laid-back of a season as they come, which means shopping for provisions for all your pool, beach, picnic, and barbecue needs should hardly be a fuss. Enter: wine from Amazon. If there's ever a time to order wine online, it's now, when you have your feet in the sand, lounging until the sun sets.

We scoured the site for five summery bottles, be it bubbles, white, rosé, or red. Bonus: None of them will cost you more than $15. All that's left for you to do is to place an order — and be there when the shipment gets delivered."

"This California Pinot Noir is medium-bodied with lots of juicy berry notes. It makes the ideal counterpart to grilled meat — chicken, steak, sausages, and burgers — as well as grilled salmon. Chill it slightly and you won't even realize you're drinking a red in the middle of the summer." $15 -
