Parducci Wine Cellars Celebrates 85th Anniversary

May 12, 2017 (Ukiah, CA) – Parducci® Wine Cellars, Mendocino’s longest running winery, is celebrating its 85th anniversary with the release of 85, a special Cuvée honoring John Parducci, “Mr. Mendocino”.

85 showcases the heartland varietals of Mendocino County – Cabernet Sauvignon (69%), Merlot (18%), Petite Verdot (8%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). 85, to be released on May 12, 2017, is priced at $45 per bottle with the 241 cases produced available directly from the winery (/wines).

Crafted by renowned head winemaker Bob Swain, who is celebrating his 20th anniversary as Parducci’s winemaker, 85 represents the best of the 2015 Vintage. “In anticipation of our 85th Anniversary we selected some of our most prized fruit and crafted an exceptional blend that would make John Parducci proud”, enthuses Swain.

In celebration of their 85th anniversary Parducci Wine Cellars is also featuring a True Grit Petite Sirah varietal retrospective of the 2004, 2005 and 2006 vintages. These highly-regarded wines, stored perfectly in their cellars, will only be available for a short time via the tasting room and on the website.

“John Parducci was a huge lover of Petite Sirah and Bob has carried the torch and made some of the best not only in Mendocino County but in the state”, says Tim Thornhill, owner. “We’re honored to be able to open our cellars to our visitors, wine club members and Petite Sirah fans for this unique retrospective tasting opportunity of the 2004, 2005 and 2006 vintages.”

Huffington Post Visits Parducci Wine Cellars, Profiles Tim Thornhill

The Huffington Post's Kelly Mitchell recently visited Mendocino Wine Company and toured Parducci Wine Cellars with co-owner Tim Thornhill to discuss innovative water recycling methods, wildlife habitat conservation, and the making of great wine.

The article features an in-depth profile of Thornhill that shows how the combination of his background in ranch work, success as a landscaper, and unique approach to problem-solving resulted in Parducci becoming "the very first carbon neutral winery in the United States to operate on 100% green power."

The winery's huge strides in water conservation are instructive in light of California's continuing drought. After purchasing Parducci in 2004, Thornhill reduced the winery's wastewater pollution by installing filters and "trickle towers," in addition to recycling both leftover machinery and sugar-eating, filamentous fungi (which keep the trickle towers clean). Also key was creating a habitat based on the Everglades, the world's largest natural water filter system, which turned Parducci's former wastewater pond into a certified wildlife habitat. Mendocino Wine Company has received the GEELA Award (California's highest environmental award) three times, and Thornhill is able to recycle 100% of his winery's water at any time.

Thornhill's success comes from a rugged individualism that doesn't believe in the word "can't" and still remembers the lesson of his parents to leave things better than how you found them. Parducci's True Grit line of craft wines (made from 100% Mendocino grapes) perfectly reflects Thornhill's iconoclastic philosophy in the same way the line's boot illustration celebrates the bold determination of the visionary winemakers who planted grapevines here in the 1800s.

Examiner.com Enjoys True Grit Reserve Wines

Examiner.com provides a succinct but comprehensive history of Parducci Family Cellars before extolling the virtues of the True Grit Reserve line of wines and offering some mouth-watering food parings.

The Examiner's True Grit Reserve tasting notes:

2013 Reserve Chardonnay: "This elegant Chardonnay shows a nice balance between fruit, acidity, and wood. Green apple, lemon and caramel on the aromas. Lovely dance of ripe pears, pineapple and caramelized apples on the palate. We enjoyed this wine paired with a homemade mac & cheese."

2012 Reserve Red: "This approachable red blend shows aromas of ripe plum, vanilla, and hints of spiced rum. On the palate, this wine feels well structured, with pleasant tannins and acidity. Displays flavors of ripe blackberries, plum, baking spices and notes of wood. We enjoyed this wine with thick pork chops seared in the pan and finished in the oven; seasoned with a rub of kosher salt, black pepper, paprika, onion powder, and garlic."

2013 Reserve Petite Sirah: "This wine has a very expressive bouquet of ripe raspberries, violets, sweet vanilla and notes of coffee bean. On the palate, this well-crated wine feels silky with flavors of ripe dark fruit, black pepper and sautéed mushrooms. This Petite Sirah has pleasant acidity with a deep finish of ripe fruit and toffee flavors and smooth tannins. We enjoyed this wine with a Neapolitan-style pizza topped with pepperoni, mushrooms, caramelized onions, and fennel."

2013 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon: "This robust Cabernet Sauvignon shows aromas of dark berries, red currants, toasted wood and hints of eucalyptus and wet slate. On the palate, this wine feels a bit chewy and well-balanced with bold flavors of dark plums, ripe fig, dark berries, and notes of earth."

Texas Wine Lover Asks The 2013 True Grit RESERVE Cabernet Sauvignon To Go Steady

Texas Wine Lover writes a sweetly sensual review of the 2013 True Grit RESERVE Cabernet Sauvignon, starting by removing the cork: "Even before pouring the wine in the glass, I already knew this wine was going to suit my tastes. In the glass the wine pours a deep ruby with a slightly lighter rim. The nose is quite layered for such a youthful wine showcasing notes of black currant, black cherries, vegetal notes, bell pepper, and menthol. The palate is similar, but offers up nuances of flamboyant black fruits, coffee bean, mint, and the mouthfeel is quite dusty, which is a complement to the True Grit namesake. This wine ends with a fairly long and supple finish on the back palate."

Texas Wine Lover continues: "My honest thoughts are buy it and drink it now for a youthful and complex wine. Cellar it for a later date to coax softer components from the evolving liquid abyss...this wine is very drinkable and offers enough substance to really get you thinking. It gets an A+ in my book for quality and balance, with a swath of complexity to swim though as you geek out and savor every drop of this wine."

Examiner.com Salutes True Grit's Taste Of The Old West

Examiner.com praises Parducci True Grit Reserve Wines with a thoughtful review detailing each reserve selection, and gives props to proprieter Tim Thornhill for his "selective fruit sourcing and hands-on winemaking."

The review notes the distinctive attributes of each True Grit offering:

2013 True Grit Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon: "This 'Big Boy' needs time to breathe and to show off burly cassis and mint aromas. Multi-layered cherry, currant and warm spice flavors linger in a long, elegant finish."

2013 True Grit Reserve Petite Sirah: "The intense, inky  has small additions of syrah and grenache added for complexity and powerful backbone. Herbaceous aromas of ripe, black fruit entice as cascades of blackberry, dark chocolate and pepper dance on the palate."

2013 True Grit Reserve Chardonnay: "Opens with frisky apple and peach aromas. This straw-hued wine has silky pear, lemon custard and creamy apple flavors. This chardonnay is food friendly and will gladly share the menu with holiday dishes."

2013 True Grit Reserve Red Blend: "A seductive merger of mainly syrah with dollops of zinfandel and petite sirah for structure. Tempting aromas of plum and black cherry open to ripe blueberry, cherry and spice tart flavors."

Parducci Wine Cellars Wins GEELA For Third Time

Parducci Wine Cellars was honored with the 2014 Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) this past Wednesday, January 21, 2015. This marks the third GEELA win for PWC and Mendocino Wine Company, in the category of Agricultural Ecosystem Services.

“We are honored to play our part in reclaiming and sustaining a healthy environment,” said Tim Thornhill upon receiving the award. “This award is an affirmation of Mendocino Wine Company’s and the Thornhill family’s commitment to our environment and community.”

Mendocino Wine Compnay is the nation's first carbon-neutral winery, reclaiming 100% of the water used in its winery cellars via an on-site system of constructed wetlands; it has also been recognized by the Audobon Society for the role that habitat plays in the annual bird count.

The Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award Program is California's highest environmental honor. The program recognizes individuals, organizations, and businesses that have demonstrated exceptional leadership and made notable, voluntary contributions in conserving California's precious resources, protecting and enhancing our environment, building public-private partnerships and strengthening the State's economy.
