WINEMAKER BOB SWAIN SPEAKS FROM THE CELLAR about what's new for winter 2013 at Parducci.
Q: What are you and the winemaking team up to this time of year?
A: We are blending the 2012 whites, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay as well as prepping the 2012 Pinot Noirs. We have either bottled or are about to bottle many of the 2012 whites, and it is proving to be a fantastic vintage in terms of quality and volume.
Q: What are some of the early characteristics of the 2012 vintage?
A: The whites have great aromatics and balance, while the reds are some of the darkest wines we have had in years.
Q: What new releases are you especially looking forward to sharing this spring?
A: We also just blended the 2010 Small Lot Blend Petite Sirah, and it is a big boy! Boatloads of pepper spice and jammy texture; it will be one to look for.

Our Garden Is Growing
Our gardening guru, Jess Arnsteen, is in charge of helping us create and maintain a huge organic garden on the Parducci property.
Since then, we've been hard at work and the harvest is really starting to pay off. Everything from corn to melons to tomatoes, potatoes, strawberries, and lots more. As you gardeners out there know, there is nothing like enjoying fresh produce from your own backyard. Every few days you'll see smiling folks walk away from Parducci with bags of fruits and veggies, just plucked from the earth. It's been a fantastic ride this far, and we can't wait for the fruit and nut trees to mature. Come out and see how we're growing our garden. If you see Jess out there (that's where you'll usually find him) give him a wave!
The Tasting Panel magazine profiles PWC owner and "Habitat Hero" Tim Thornhill, getting the scoop on how the Houston native came to Mendocino and “turned one of America’s oldest wineries into one of America’s greenest.”
The Tasting Panel also mentions how Thornhill's "water reclamation project has conserved water and saved money: Five million gallons are recycled annually. His waterfalls are both esthetically pleasing while also serving to oxygenate reclaimed winery waste water. His man-made wetland is an ecosystem that mimics the Everglades, using plants as a “green filter,” constructively cleaning water for use in the vineyards as well as for Parducci’s certified wildlife habitat."

The Detroit News gave a stellar review to the 2009 Parducci Small Lot Blend Cabernet Sauvignon, noting it "has wonderful dusty tannins that cling to the palate" and "overperforms for the price."
The article continues: "Read the words running across the tall red label for good descriptors: Yummy, currants, structured, elegant. The Parducci Small Lot Blend Cabernet Sauvignon Mendocino County 2009 is an exceptional Cab for the price--the flavors are soft and approachable."

This November, Parducci Wine Club chats with Assistant Winemaker Mark Beaman.
Mark Beaman, Assistant Winemaker:
"2012 has been a stellar harvest for us, with that rare combination of quality and quantity. The early spell of heat didn't hurt the vines, but actually boosted the ripening process.
"Good temperatures and a dry season balanced the fruit between sugar and skin ripening. We're looking at big, nicely extracted wines with fine-tuned acidity and moderate alcohol.
"This year we rallied the crew and brought in a full harvest--even at the tail end of harvest the crew came through and really was enthusiastic to get it in. I'm proud of all of them. Like your rose garden we'll be pruning our vines back for the winter months ahead."

The 2009 Parducci Small Lot Blend Pinot Noir is called "an excellent wine to consider a case purchase of as a house wine. by Gabe's View Wine: Reviews, Thoughts & Culture blog.
The post also mentions that "Parducci routinely turns out very good value wines that are emblematic of their Mendocino origins" and how this wine "is a fine Pinot to sip on its own or better yet pair with a meal." Thank you, Gabe!
